"Prior to your workshop, Paulette, I had been feeling pretty discouraged. We've been married 38 years and I've found all but the first six years very challenging. We've been going to fortnightly marriage counselling for the last 4 years with someone who understands Asperger's, but I felt frustrated that she seemed to make a lot of excuses for Perter's behaviours. He enjoyed going to her but I couldn't see many changes in our relationship. At $180 an hour with no medical rebate and seemingly little progress, I suggested we have a break and concentrate on the NVC material you covered with us instead.
At last, although he has his strong perspectives on things, with a fair bit of prompting and encouragement from me, he is beginning to associate a name of a feeling with body sensations, and guesses a feeling for himself, and even for my daughter and me! It has been such a breakthrough. It has been worth waiting for. Of course, there are many years of habitual patterns in our interactions to work through but I think we're heading in a positive direction at last.
So thanks for your part in that, and your commitment to sharing NVC and being so calm, caring and encouraging in your workshop. I feel so inspired by people like you who model compassion and compassionate communication. It is truly a life-enriching gift that you share with the world. It encourages me to be the change I want to see in the world.
